Pneumonia vaccine might help those at risk
One of the main vaccines to help fight pneumonia is the pneumococcal vaccine, which is used for children and adults
ONALASKA, Wis (WKBT) – With the flu season continuing, we have talked a lot about the flu vaccine, but what about the benefits of the pneumonia vaccine?
Pneumonia is the inflammation of air sacs in one or both lungs, and it can be caused by a number of organisms including bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
One of the main vaccines to help fight pneumonia is the pneumococcal vaccine, which is used for children and adults.
The illness has the ability to affect people of all ages, though the death rate is higher with older populations and other high-risk groups.
“It’s really important to prevent complications in both younger and older people, to prevent these hospitalizations. And also for the purposes of decreasing the spread of disease,” said Dr. Raj Naik, the Childhood Immunization Champion for Gundersen Health System.
