Virtual event educates about Afghan evacuees entering communities
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Welcoming Afghan evacuees into the community was the focus of an online discussion Tuesday evening.
UW-La Crosse, Viterbo University, and Western Technical College teamed up for the virtual event.
The online presentation featured two speakers, both of which have experience working with Afghan populations and the resettlement process.
They spoke about what the evacuees are going through and how community members can interact with Afghans who are new to the U.S.
“Especially those of us in the Coulee region, how can we interact with our new guests in meaningful ways with keeping in mind cultural traditions and differences, and how can we be educated about that and the Afghan culture,” said Colin Burns-Gilbert, Director of Orientation and Engagement at Viterbo University.
If you missed Tuesday’s presentation, a recording will be posted here.
