Volunteers needed for Letter Carrier’s Food Drive

Event collects more than 100,000 lbs. of food

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Now that the school year is coming to an end, many families begin to rely more on local food pantries.

Every year, the Great River’s United Way works with the National Association of Letter Carriers to collect more than 100,000 lbs. of non-perishable food for five local pantries.

Volunteers are needed to follow the letter carriers through neighborhoods asking for food donations.

Organizers say without community volunteers, collecting food items would be a lot tougher.

“Take a hard look at the issue of food insecurity in our area because the need is great. One in six families suffer from food insecurity, and one in three people who utilize a food pantry in our area is a child,” said Great Rivers United Way Development Dir. Jamie Korn.
