Volunteers pull thousands of pounds of trash from Mississippi, Black rivers
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Volunteers on land and water helped clean up La Crosse’s waterways.
They spent the day dragging in debris from old docks and barrels by boat.
On land, there were needles and other sharp objects collected.
Organizers say they want to remove safety hazards for boaters and people who come to swim in the river.
They’ve collected literal tons of garbage over the years.
“This is the 29th year and overall in those 29 years, we’ve accumulated 730,000 pounds of garbage,” said La Crosse Fire Department’s Troy Glasel. “Our goal is to reach three-quarters of a million pounds this year.”
Volunteers say the effort doesn’t stop after today’s event.
They say everyone can do their part any day of the year by picking up trash along the banks.
