Volunteers travel through Eau Claire, La Crosse in honor of fallen military veterans, first responders
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Memorial day may be several weeks away, but volunteers marched through the area today in honor of veterans. They’re a part of the “Carry the Load” national relay to honor and remember our fallen military and first responders.
Walkers and cyclists are covering 20,000 miles on five different routes through 48 states all leading to a special memorial day rally in Dallas Texas.
Sunday – they started in Eau Claire, and finished the day in La Crosse. Organizers say it’s a way to remember and honor those who laid down their lives for our freedom.
“So, I never served in the military, but this is my way as a civilian to give back,” said Hunter Lovelace, a Carry the Load photographer. “I’ve had several encounters in my life where first responders, firefighters, have been there to help police officers, and of course, I couldn’t be here doing this if it wasn’t for the sacrifices those made overseas .”
This is the tenth year for the relay. Volunteer walkers and riders head to Madison on Monday with stops in Wisconsin Dells and Baraboo.
