Voter files lawsuit over outcome of La Crosse County Sheriff’s recount
LA CROSSE (WKBT) — A La Crosse voter is suing the County Clerk over the overcome of the sheriff’s race.
According to court documents, Mary Jo Werner says clerk Ginny Dankmeyer disenfranchised her by denying challenges made during the sheriff’s race recount.
Republican candidate Fritz Leinfelder lost the November election to Democrat John Siegel by 175 votes. Siegel gained one more vote after the recount.
Leinfelder is not named in the civil suit, but the attorney who represented Leinfelder during the recount is representing Werner.
The suit alleges the County Clerk “diluted” Werner’s vote by denying recount challenges to reject some absentee ballots and ballots cast by college students.
Leinfelder filed an affidavit raising similar arguments the day of the recount but then conceded.
A hearing is set for December 2.
