Voters head to the polls for 95th Assembly race

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A new member of the Wisconsin state Assembly representing the city of La Crosse was to be elected Tuesday.

The special election was required after former Democratic state Rep. Jennifer Shilling won election to the state Senate in August in a recall election against Republican Dan Kapanke. Shilling had held the seat since 2001.

Republican David Drewes and Democrat Jill Billings were on Tuesday’s ballot for the 95th Assembly district which covers the city of La Crosse and small parts of the towns of Campbell and Shelby.

Billings has been a La Crosse County supervisor for eight years. Drewes is a local government watchdogs and a former insurance and iron salesman.

Republicans currently hold a 59 to 38 majority in the Assembly. There is one independent.
