WAFER celebrates 30th anniversary with big announcement

An area food pantry is celebrating a big milestone with an equally big announcement.

WAFER celebrated 30 years of helping the La Crosse area with an open house Wednesday night. That’s where they also announced their next big initiative, a mobile food pantry.

It will be a specialized vehicle capable of refrigerating and transporting products at various locations around La Crosse County.

WAFER’s executive director says having a pantry on wheels will help them serve even more people.

“We know that there are pockets in our county that are significantly under-served and we know that transportation is a huge barrier for the people that we serve. We’re hoping that this initiative will combat both of those,” Erin Waldhart.

WAFER says they’ve seen the need for services like theirs grow over their 30 years.

Last year, they gave out 18,000 food items to people in need.
