WAFER Food Pantry in La Crosse breaks ground for building at new location
LA CROSSE (WKBT) — The WAFER Food Pantry broke ground for a new building at 1607 George St. Wednesday.
WAFER bought the former Gordy’s Market for its new building, partly to be closer to the community it serves than its current building at 403 Causeway Blvd.
Pantry officials also said their current building could no longer accommodate the changes WAFER hopes to make with its programs.
“It has an incredible history of feeding people in this neighborhood,” said Taylor Haley, president of WAFER’s board of directors. “So when the opportunity came for us to purchase it, and to begin feeding people again here in the community it was a wonderful opportunity to take a building that had been built for a particular purpose and continue that tradition.
The new building is expected to be up and running by spring.
