WAFER goes green with organic recycling

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – A local food pantry is going green.

WAFER has teamed up with Hilltopper Refuse & Recycling to keep food waste out of the landfill.

The food pantry experiences a lot of waste every day because most of the fresh food being donated has a short shelf life.

In addition to reducing food waste, the food pantry is also recycling more plastics.

It’s extra work for the volunteers, but they say it’s worth it.

“The volunteers have been super excited about this, especially the ones that have been here so long. They have seen the waste, they know what happens to it. Now that we can make this change, and be able to do something better with it and better for the environment, that makes them excited,” said Erin Waldhart, Executive Director of WAFER.

She says they are working on creating a system that will make the new responsibility more efficient.

WAFER started organic recycling at the end of February.
