Walk to School Day gets area kids out of the cars

Safe Kids Coalition event tries to get kids active, teach them pedestrian safety

Students around the area got out of the car and onto the sidewalks Wednesday morning.

Ten schools in La Crosse County participated in International Walk to School Day, including Spence Elementary in La Crosse. About 40 kids from the elementary school participated.

The event is a partnership with the Safe Kids Coalition, trying to get kids active while teaching pedestrian safety.

“We’ll teach them about looking both ways when they cross the street, we also talk to children about putting down devices when they’re crossing the streets,” said Kim Lombard, of the Safe Kids Coalition.

“I think I should do it a lot because it’s really fun and I can walk with my friends,” said 4th Grader Khalil Coates.

An estimated quarter million students are participating across the U-S.
