Waterloo plant demolition work to resume

Demolition could resume this week at the former Chamberlain Manufacturing plant in Waterloo.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier says the work stopped six months ago after the demolition contractor unearthed something that let off an odor that spread through the neighborhood on the northeast side of Waterloo. Testing had already shown there is soil and groundwater contamination in and around the 22-acre complex.

The work was halted while air samples were checked and several public information meetings were held with the owners of nearby properties.

The Environmental Protection Agency says air samples didn’t show dangerous levels of contaminants.

Chamberlain, a former defense contractor, operated on the site from 1919 until 1994. The city acquired the property in 2005.
