Weather Service: St. Michael tornado an EF-1

The National Weather Service has confirmed the storm that caused extensive damage near St. Michael this week included a tornado – the state’s first of the year.

Forecasters have given Tuesday night’s tornado a preliminary rating of EF-1 with wind speeds of about 90 mph. No one was hurt when the twister touched down just before 8 p.m. and stretched about 3 miles.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports ( http://bit.ly/iF1n7i) May is the third most active month for tornadoes. June is the most active, followed by July. Last year, Minnesota experienced a record 104 tornadoes.
