West Des Moines ballroom on market for $2.6M

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ��� A nearly 80-year-old concert and event venue is for sale in West Des Moines.

The Des Moines Register reports (http://dmreg.co/2gIzyYI ) that the owner of the Val Air Ballroom is asking $2.6 million for the property.

The concern hall will continue hosting events while on the market, but venue’s future is unclear. The nonprofit Neighborhood Development Corp. says the building needs roughly $1.1 million in repairs to raise it to modern standards. But the group’s report also says the building would likely qualify for designation as a cultural landmark. That would make it eligible for tax credits to help pay renovation costs.

Christopher Stafford is director of a real estate firm marketing the property, and he says the 8.5-acre parcel is big enough for the ballroom and new development.
