West Salem bakery sees last-minute rush before Thanksgiving
WEST SALEM, Wis. (WKBT) — Pies, cakes, dinner rolls, cookies — Linda’s Bakery has them all. Customers are in and out of Linda’s bakery with boxes of holiday foods in their arms.
Open for nearly 48 years, Linda’s Bakery has been serving holiday desserts for many people. Preparations began a month ago for the bakery’s busiest time of year.
“We’ll see more than a 1,000 customers walk through the door,” said Bob Anderson, the bakery’s general manager.
Many workers have been at the bakery since Tuesday night, preparing orders that were placed ahead of time. Others have been baking through the night.
“Some of them came in at midnight to start, more people at 4 a.m. Our bakers work overnight, so they were here at 7 p.m.,” Anderson said. “We’re here around the clock.”
For some customers, Linda’s Bakery pies are a holiday staple at their dinner table this time of year.
“It’s just iconic, this is just the place to come,” said John Sullivan, a customer. “The best home cooking pies and bread you can find anywhere.”
Some items flew off the shelves early, selling out quickly. One of the first items to be sold out is the bakery’s coffee cakes. Soon to follow are all types of breads.
“People love garlic toasts, bread and buns and dinner rolls,” Anderson said.
Linda’s Bakery will use this year’s sales to predict how many desserts to make for next year.
“We do our best to base our planning off of previous years to have our shop in stock for all the customers walking in through the door,” Anderson said.
These customers are looking forward to setting their Thanksgiving tables with their holiday goodies.
“I’ll fall short of that and indulge more than I probably should with the bakery and pastries and everything else,” said Sullivan.
As for Linda’s Bakery, workers look forward to the holiday spirit and serving customers despite the rush.
“Customers are very patient and our staff have fun on busy days like today, we have great camaraderie with our staff and they love serving our customers.”
Linda’s Bakery will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and will reopen on Friday at 6 a.m.
