West Salem Elementary honored as Active School National Award winner

School receives award from First Lady Michelle Obama's 'Let's Move!' campaign

An area school is being honored by the First Lady of the United States.

West Salem Elementary School is one of this year’s “Let’s Move!” Active School National Award winners. The “Let’s Move!” campaign is an initiative from First Lady Michelle Obama designed to get kids more physical education opportunities.

West Salem was honored because of the time they devote every week to physical education between classes, before- and after-school activities and work in the community.

“I think it shows we’re on the right track,” said physical education teacher Jake Merrill. “We have a district that views physical education as an important part of the school day and kids getting all they need in school.”

West Salem Elementary School was one of ten schools in Wisconsin to receive the honor.
