West Salem FD holds open house to get teens interested in fire service
WEST SALEM, Wis. (WKBT)- West Salem firefighters want to grow their department.
The volunteer department has 30 members. They would like to recruit another 6.
Firefighters held an an open house Wednesday for high school students.
Firefighters demonstrated the tools they use as well as the gear they wear.
The goal is to encourage younger people to consider volunteering with the fire service.
“… Getting kids interested, give them an avenue to come in and get started with their certifications so that when they do graduate high school, they’re able to get right into the field,” said West Salem Fire Department Capt. Scott Johnson.
Western Technical College offers classes to high schoolers so they can begin their firefighting career shortly after graduation.
