Westby creamery gets $25,000 state grant to modernize, expand for new products

MADISON — The Westby Co-op Creamery was awarded a $25,000 state grant to modernize and expand to use more milk and create new products.
The Dairy Processor Grant is one of 19 the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection announced Wednesday.
The DATCP grants are intended to foster innovation, improve profitability and sustain the long-term viability of Wisconsin’s dairy-processing facilities.
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville will receive a $10,000 grant to expand retail opportunities and technical knowledge for student managers and workers at Pioneer Sweets. The company new student-managed ice cream business at the southwest Wisconsin university.
Another grant recipient is Brunkow Cheese in Darlington, awarded $18,500 to improve its facility and processing so it will be able to offer products to larger distributors and wholesalers.
Holland’s Family Cheese in Thorp will get $22,000 to expand engineering and planning, including building and equipment designs, site development, financing and marketing.
Lynn Dairy in Granton was awarded $25,000 to buy a cheese belt to increase output and create a less labor-intensive process.
Since its inception in 2014, the DATCP has received 161 dairy processor grant proposals requesting more than $6.3 million. DATCP has funded 85 of the proposals, totaling $1.7 million.
