Westby volleyball not looking ahead despite 28-1 record

One word to sum up the Westby Volleyball team this season so far is dominant. The squad has been on an absolute mission this year and the season isn’t over yet.

Just one game remains on the schedule in what’s been an almost perfect season for the Norsemen up to this point. Their only loss of the season came back in August, but the Norsemen have handled every challenge that’s come their way, especially in the Coulee Conference. Westby is 28-1 overall, and 11-0 in conference play.

“We have that target on our back, but we try to just keep going. That’s our motto – to keep going, and focusing on the game at hand,” third-year Head Coach Arena Kvamme said. “That next game is our biggest game. We don’t really look at who that opponent is, because we know we have a target on our back, because of our record, because of how well we’re playing. Every team wants to take us down.”

“This year’s just been different,” senior Jayda Berg said. “Better connection, our passing is better. We’re just better overall, I think.”

Everything is clicking this season for the Norsemen, and a lot of that has to do with the players’ connection to one another. They’ve been friends for a while now, and those strong bonds off the court have led to some pretty good volleyball on it.

“We’ve been playing since middle school, most of us, and we just have that bond that a lot of other teams might not have,” senior Emily Collins added.

The Norsemen will wrap up the regular season on Thursday night against the Luther Knights.
