Western Technical College gets $22,593 state grant for fire service programs

MADISON (WKBT) — Western Technical College in La Crosse will receive $22,593 from a new state grant program designed to expose high school students to career and volunteer opportunities in fire services.
Western’s grant from the Department of Safety and Professional Services will go toward its programs available to high schools in the La Crosse area, according to a DSPS news release. The programs create dual-credit opportunities for high school students interested in Basic Fire Safety Certification or the WTC Fire Science Degree.
Fire services are key stakeholder groups for DSPS, which regulates firefighter health and safety and manages the state fire prevention program. It also administers a 2% dues program that distributes funds collected from insurers and matched by the state to qualifying fire departments.
