Western’s Learner Support and Transition department wins national award

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Western Technical College’s Learner Support and Transition division was recently recognized as an innovative practice in adult education by the Advancing Innovation in Adult Education Project, a national project that recognizes achievements in adult education.

The division is being recognized for its curriculum and delivery, designed and built to address the needs of at-risk adults returning to school to obtain a diploma. The college’s efforts include speeding up the graduation processes, being culturally responsive, and installing poverty-informed practices throughout the division. Western was selected as one of four institutions nationwide to receive this recognition.

“We are truly honored to receive this award, and it’s a testament to our great staff,” said Mandy Church-Hoffman, dean of the Learner Support and Transition division at Western. “This recognition reinforces the importance of integrated education, just in time support, and co-teaching models that we have developed with the adult student in mind.”

The project is supported by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education (OCTAE) to identify, recognize, and disseminate innovative practices in adult education.
