Winona man sentenced in accidental shooting death

A Winona man was sentenced in Winona County District Court Wednesday in the accidental shooting death of a friend in November of 2016.

Judge Jeffrey Thompson placed Lucas Ryan Schultz on probation for 10 years. Schultz will serve 180 days in probationary jail and he was given credit for 107 days already served, according to court reports.

In addition, Schultz must serve 30 days of local jail beginning November first of each year, for the next five years. He can ask the Court to waive the staggered jail time each year if he is able to demonstrate to the Court that he has completed community service.

Schultz must pay a $6000 fine and must obstain from the use and possession of alcohol and drugs and he must not possess or use firearms.

20-year-old Lucas Ryan Schultz is charged with second-degree manslaughter.

According to the criminal complaint, Schultz and a friend, 20-year-old Riley Holden Sass-Loken, were joking around during a night of drinking when Schultz pointed a gun at the Sass-Loken and pulled the trigger.

The gun fired, hitting Sass-Loken in the face. He later died at the hospital from his injuries.

Schultz was legally drunk at the time of the shooting with a BAC of 0.172.

He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
