Winona State hosts 54th annual Model Legislature for students

6th through 12th graders try their hand at crafting legislation

Area students are getting a first-hand look at how government works.

Winona State University is hosting the 54th annual Model Legislature on campus this week.

Students from 6th to 12th grade from a number of Winona-area schools are coming together to act as members of the House of Representatives, State Senate and the Governor’s office while writing and voting on a bill.

Minnesota State Representative Gene Pelowski served as the advisor for this year’s model legislature and says the program has inspired many careers in politics.

“We have students who participated in this model legislature at every level of government, including staffing the President of the United States,” said Pelowski.

The model legislature will wrap up it’s “session” tomorrow.
