Wisconsin Assembly pushes to require national anthem at sporting events

Measure covers events at taxpayer-funded venues

MADISON, Wis. (WKBT) — The Wisconsin Assembly approved the Star-Spangled Banner Act, which would require playing or singing the national anthem before sporting events in taxpayer-funded venues throughout the state.
The bipartisan vote of 74-22 Tuesday pushed the measure to the State Senate, where co-author Sen. Patrick Testin, R-Stevens Point, expects it to receive support.
“It’s reasonable to expect that venues constructed with taxpayer dollars show the same respect for our country that we require in our schools and in the state Capitol,” said Testin, whose co-author in the Assembly is Rep. Tony Kurtz, R-Wonewoc.
“I’m encouraged by the broad support for this bill,” Testin said.
Testin also has a petition on his website that people can sign if they support the act.
