Wisconsin committee orders tech school policy to rule
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — State lawmakers have ordered election officials to craft formal rules detailing policies allowing technical college students to use their school ID cards at the polls.
The Government Accountability Board last week decided language in the state’s new voter identification law allows technical college IDs on election day.
Republicans on the Legislature’s rules committee say the law’s authors never meant to include technical college students because they typically live in the communities where they go to school and have other forms of state identification.
The committee ordered the board Tuesday to put the policy into administrative rules. Once in that format, Republican Gov. Scott Walker can reject or approve the policy. Democrats say Walker will kill it. His spokesman didn’t immediately return a message.
