Wisconsin DNR offers grants to replace trees

MADISON, WI (AP) — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is offering grants to help people replace young trees that died in last summer’s drought.

Landowners who saw a significant loss in trees planted from 2008 through 2012 in 49 counties may be eligible for replanting money through the Wisconsin Landowner Grant Program.

Applicants must own at least 10 acres but not more than 500 acres of forest land in the state; must have an approved forest stewardship plan and can’t collect more than $10,000 in grants annually. A DNR forester must verify an applicant’s loss is directly related to the drought as well.

The grants will cover up to 60 percent of the costs of replanting trees where the forester determines there’s a need.
