Wisconsin lawmakers to vote on Lemon Law changes

MADISON, WI (AP) — The Wisconsin state Senate is scheduled to vote on passing a bill tightening the state’s lemon law, which covers when consumers can sue auto manufacturers.

The bill up for a vote Tuesday would remove the ability to receive double damages in such cases and shorten the deadline for bringing a lawsuit from six years after purchasing a faulty vehicle to three years.

The bill is backed by the state’s largest business lobbying group as well as a coalition of vehicle manufacturers and dealers.

The Assembly passed it on a bipartisan 88-8 vote in June.

The few Democrats who opposed the measure then say the changes weaken the lemon law, hurting consumers and making it more difficult for them to be successful in lawsuits involving faulty vehicles.
