Woman accused of murdering husband with eye drops

A South Carolina woman is accused of murdering her husband by putting eye drops in his water.

Lana Sue Clayton, 52, was charged with murder and unlawful malicious tampering of food. The York County Sheriff’s Department said Stephen Clayton, 64, died from poisoning. An autopsy revealed lethal levels of tetrahydrozoline in his blood. The chemical is found in over-the-counter eye drops such as Visine.

The Sheriff’s Department said Lana Clayton admitted to investigators that she had administered the substance to her husband without his knowledge for three days. Stephen Clayton was found dead at the couple’s home, in Clover, on July 21.

Arrest warrants and the suspect’s statement did not reveal a motive for the poisoning, according to NBC News.
