Woman charged with causing her baby’s death

STURGEON BAY, Wis. (AP) — A Door County mother is charged with causing the death of her baby daughter by leaving the girl alone in a running vehicle for several hours.

Prosecutors say 33-year-old Melissa Martinez was heavily intoxicated when she left eight-month-old Elena in the overheated vehicle outside their home in Brussels last month. A criminal complaint charges Martinez with intoxicated use of a vehicle and neglecting a child resulting in death.

WLUK-TV says medical personnel reported the baby had an interior body temperature of nearly 108 degrees after a 40-minute transport to the hospital.

Investigators say Martinez was in the house while the baby was in the vehicle. She is being held on $25,000 bond.
