Xcel uses helicopter crews to work on power lines

Xcel Energy is taking to the sky for work on a high voltage power line known as the ‘Capx2020 project’.

The company is using helicopters to install spacers on the 345,000 volt power line. The spacers prevent conductors on the power line from touching. Helicopter crews were also installing shield wire to prevent lighting strikes.

The 500 million dollar project runs from northern Minnesota to the Briggs Road substation in Holmen. The project is scheduled to be completed in September.
