‘Xtreme Hike’ turns three months of training into 30-mile hike

The 6th ‘Xtreme Hike’ began at 6:00 a.m. Saturday behind the Radisson Hotel in La Crosse and ended around 4:30 p.m. at the same place. In the meantime, hikers went on a 30-mile journey though Hixon Forest and the surrounding area.

Lisa Fero, the development director for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Wisconsin chapter, said training starts in July with about two-mile hikes and goes up every week from there.

“We see some people every single weekend; we see some people every other, and then we don’t see some of our hikers until the day-of. And so, they’re from all different kinds of fitness levels. We have people that just train for this hike,” said Fero.

Fero said that 44 hikers and 15 volunteers helped the event raise $150,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
